Risk Racing Palm Protectors

Although I do not suffer from blisters very often due to good glove selection and a vigilant relaxation technique when riding, I have a couple of riding buddies that do suffer from blisters and I know they are not alone, which brings me to reviewing Risk Racing’s Palm Protectors. They claim to stop blisters, help with the dampening of vibrations, and be very comfortable.  Who wouldn’t want that right?

In all honesty, when I saw them I didn’t really give them much thought since I really don’t ever get blisters anymore.  However, a few Saturdays ago my brother-in-law showed me his blister collection from the previous Saturday and I suggested he try these new Palm Protectors.  I knew he suffered from blisters, but I really had no idea how bad.  He had blisters on the palms of both hands next to all 4 fingers and an extra one on the palms of each hand just for good measure.

My brother-in-law ordered a pair of Palm Protectors, which are actually quite in-expensive ($7.99). After he wore them I asked what he thought. He showed me his hands and said these are great.  His hands didn’t have any blisters at all.

I asked how comfortable they were, and said they are actually quite comfortable and that he didn’t notice them when riding at all.

In the next week I ordered myself a set to see what I thought so I could write this review.

Here are my thoughts after one ride:

  • They are nicely priced ($7.99)
  • They are comfortable enough that don’t notice you are wearing them.
  • They are thin enough to fit under even the tightest fitting glove without much trouble
  • They stop blisters from happening
  • Chicks dig ’em <– Ok, I made that part up 🙂

The only bad part is they are not going to last as long as I had hoped.  They are already showing some signs of wear after only one ride.  However with the cost being lower than I expected, I don’t really see it as a real problem.  I guess it would be about like getting mad because your grips wore out.  They are not going to last forever, and a reasonable price I don’t see that as a big deal.

All in all, a great product.  I would give it 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Update: November 7th, 2010

After spending another day at the track wearing the Risk Racing Palm Protectors, I have come to the conclusion that if you don’t suffer from blisters normally, you probably shouldn’t wear these.

I fall into that category, and after using them yesterday I actually started to feel some rubbing in the creases located where my palm ends and fingers begin.  I didn’t get a blister from it, but it was rubbing enough that I took them off and didn’t have a problem after that.

So in conclusion (the 2nd part) if you do suffer from blisters, these are a good solution.  If you don’t suffer from blisters, your results may vary.
